First Aid

First Aid has two purposes – to address minor injuries, so the casualty can continue on with his or her activity, and also to stabilise the casualty until an emergency ambulance arrives to transport them to hospital.

Course Length: 3 hours plus pre-course online component

Course Audience: The unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings. This delivery is recommended for those who have previous first aid training experience and are renewing their skills.

Course Audience: The unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings. This delivery is recommended for those who are new to first aid or those who would gain confidence from a longer class session.

Pre-Course Theory Assessment

This training is delivered in blended delivery format. Participants are required to complete the assessment prior to training as home based learning, independently of the classroom session. Demonstration of CPR Compressions and Recovery Position

It is a mandatory assessment requirement in all CPR / first aid courses that participants demonstrate CPR on the floor, not on an elevated surface. To be assessed as competent in this course you must be physically capable of performing CPR on the floor as well as demonstrating the Recovery Position. If you have an injury that limits your ability to adequately demonstrate CPR or the recovery position you may attend the course and be issued a non-accredited Statement of Attendance.

Assessment Requirements and Learning Outcomes

Performance and Knowledge Evidence:

There must be evidence that the participant has completed the following tasks in line with state/territory regulations, first aid codes of practice, Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines and workplace procedures:

  • performed at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.
  • performed at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles both compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.  READ MORE

On successful completion of this training, participants will be awarded a statement of attainment in HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support and HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
